What is a Direct Object?
A direct object is a noun or pronoun that receives the action of a verb (and can never be inside a prepositional phrase). Some examples of direct objects would be the following:
Georgia spiked the volleyball over the net.
I wore hiking boots on our camping trip.
Jaden plays trumpet in the school jazz band.
Kevin asked Russell for a stick of gum.
Within a sentence, direct objects come after action verbs (and after indirect objects if there are any), and they will never appear in a prepositional phrase.
